Getting through dinner was hard enough after that. I smiled and joked as normally as I could with my family, but the finality of Orion’s words and demeanor still haunted me. Not to mention kissing him seemed to make my brain function incorrectly. Every lull in conversation brought me back to how rough and delicious he was, then the feeling marred by how insistently he claimed it would be the last interaction between us ever.

I couldn’t accept that. We hadn’t even had a chance to begin. What kind of consequences of a spell could possibly make him not want to ever see me again?

As if I didn’t have enough to deal with, Conan texted me soon after dinner ended.

“Hey… Y’know you could’ve just told me if you had a boyfriend.”

I stared at the screen for a long moment before tapping out my reply.

“Um, I don’t. Don’t know where you got that idea.”

“I saw you at the edge of the meadow. Against the tree,” was his reply.

Fuck.

I should’ve known. His cabin was less than a mile away from the meadow, so I should have expected him to be around.

Another message came through before I could type out an answer.

“It’s cool… no hard feelings or anything. I would’ve backed off if I had known.”

I never texted so quickly in my life.

“Listen, Conan, I’m sorry you had to see that. That guy isn’t my boyfriend. My situation is complicated though, to say the least. You’re sweet and I like you but TBH, you probably shouldn’t get involved with someone like me. I’m really sorry.”

I fired off the message before I had a chance to change my mind, then opened my work email account to scour the directory for Chase’s number.

He didn’t answer his desk phone, work cell, or personal cell phone that I tried.

“Damn it!” I huffed in frustration, throwing my phone down on the bed.

After trying all his numbers again, I called the main IT line with the slim hope that someone might still be in the office to tell me where he was. No dice. Once I did all that, I still had yet to receive a reply from Conan so maybe he actually heeded my warning. It was probably for the best but I kind of hoped he would keep trying.

That only left me one option. To do exactly what Orion told me not to— follow his scent trail.

I sat debating on my bed for no more than a minute before cracking open my gun safe in search of a handgun. My fingers hovered over the Glock 9mm but I ended up going for the .40 caliber Glock 23. Who knew if I would need the extra power tonight.

I didn’t bother telling anyone I was leaving this time. I was an adult, I could come and go as I please. And for all I knew, the shots that rang out tonight wouldn’t be all mine.

My feet took me to the same tree where Orion and I had just been hours earlier.
